Ever since I visited TWG during my birthday, I’ve been itching to go back. So I visited the TWG at Marina Bay Sands and decided to try something new. This time I ordered the 1837 tea time set ($19).
It includes a pot of tea and two scones or muffins or a patisserie from their dessert trolley. I enjoyed the Geisha Blossom (T6013) tea I drank last time, so I ordered the same thing.
I’m not familiar with TWG’s food, so I asked the waiter for his recommendations. He recommended the scones and that’s what I ordered.
Interestingly, they serve the scones with whipped cream and something called “TWG jelly”, which gave me ample reason to pause. “TWG jelly” sounds like the name of a lubricant. As I waited for my order, my concerns began to mount.
When my scones arrived, I gingerly tried the jelly. It smells like one of those fruity facial washes marketed to women. As I dipped my knife in for a sample, I reckon it tastes like said facial wash. Not that I spend my free time wondering what women’s facial wash taste like, but having spent a fair amount of time shopping for facial wash with several female companions over the years, one can’t help but wonder.
It tasted tart, tangy and smooth in texture, thanks to the jelly-like consistency. As the jelly cleared my palette, I thought it tasted bad. But the surprising thing is that it goes great with the dry, crumbly scones. When taken together, it tasted divine. It relieves the dryness of the scones while added some zing to it.
It was so good, I finished it first.
The whipped cream is smooth and almost buttery. It was like no whipped cream I have eaten before. It has a lighter and more refreshing taste than the jelly and goes well with the scones too.
I had a nice time and as always, I found it to be a relaxing and civilised way to unwind and pass the time. I wonder what I’ll order next time..
