Learn to change your own strings

“The string cost $1, but it cost me $15 to get it installed,” my student said.

“$15?!” I remarked incredulously. If my student had simply purchased the string, I would have happily installed it for him for free.

To add insult to injury, a good set of strings typically cost around $12-$14. The ‘installation fee’ was more expensive than a new set of strings.

Experienced guitarists change their strings all the time. Installing and removing strings is a simple procedure. If you take lessons from a teacher, get your teacher to install/change strings for you.

Ethical teachers should not charge you for it, though the procedure could eat into ‘lesson’ time.

Do not be too calculative if this happens. Learning to install and remove strings is part of the learning process. It is a valuable and basic skill that will aide you in the maintenance of your guitar.
