Yesterday I attended NUSSU’s RagĀ Day at the Promontory.
It was a great event filled with lots of youthful energy and vigor. This year marked the first time that NUS Students raised funds for the President’s Challenge. It was also the first time that the event was being held outside of NUS.
NUSSU chose a great place and a great time! Guests could stay on to watch the National Day Parade and to view the fireworks that were being launched from just across the bay.
Every year, thousands of NUS freshmen participate in Rag and Flag Day as part of their orientation. On Flag Day, they sell flags to raise funds for the less fortunate.
On Rag (Raising-And-Giving) Day students build floats and perform to thank donors.
Students are encouraged to use recycled items to build their floats (though I hear thatĀ some of them cheat), and there is a healthy rivalry between the halls and student faculties.
The performances were well-rehearsed and choreographed. The crowd enthusiastically received the performers with students cheering on their respective faculties.
NUSSU, the organizing committee , did a great job organizing this event. I left the event hot and a little sunburnt, but I was deeply appreciative of the enormous effort put in by all the students.
Different people help in different ways. It’s the thought and effort that counts.
