I am selling my 2010 Kristopher Barnett Cedar and Brazilian Rosewood ‘Phi’ Lattice Classical Guitar.
This guitar has a modern and contemporary tone with a dark, rich sound. The volume is excellent. Even though this is a lattice-braced guitar, it was not built to sound like a Smallman. It has a very distinctive tone that is especially well-suited for romantic and modern pieces.
This guitar was custom built to my specifications. The shape and dimensions of the neck are similar to my Asturias Standard Classical Guitar.
I prefer Japanese style necks and set-ups for my guitars. If you feel the same, then this guitar will be a dream for you to play.
I worked with Kris to select the woods for this instrument. He originally was going to use the top for a guitar he was building to showcase at GFA 2010, but he used it for my guitar instead. The backs and sides are laminated Brazilian rosewood with a beautiful orange hue and sap. It also has a 12-hole tie bridge.
This is Kris’ newer ‘Phi’ Lattice model. Unlike his older lattice guitars, this model uses lattice bracing constructed to the measurements of ‘Phi’.
This instrument features an arched braceless back, a sound port and a removable magnetic armrest. It is in excellent condition with some slight playing wear.
A Hiscox Pro II case is included with this instrument.
8 May UPDATE
I am updating this posting due to increase enquiries. I hope this provides more clarity.
The term “playing wear” is actually not quite accurate. Kris used a new kind of finished for the guitar. During the curing process, the parts of the guitar that made contact with the padding of the Hiscox case and the armrest received light marks. They do not affect the sound of the instrument. It’s very minor and the guitar is virtually in the same condition as when I received it. But I am reluctant to describe it as being perfect, or like-new due to Kris’ oversight. He did admit to me that he should have let the instrument cure longer. I have tried to take photos of the ‘playing wear’, but they are hard to photograph because they aren’t very noticeable.

Dear Dedrick
I am very sorry to hear that you are giving up your current guitars. It is a never ending quest for the sound, the look, the beauty of the wood, etc. I have many guitars and I can say that they all displayed very different characteristics. You really to try and find out the one you really like and this takes time and luck!
There is one comment, I believe that of you really like ‘more of something’, better look for a renowned Luthier. The sound of their guitar is really different but you may need to pay much more. Also, the quality of the wood used is important. Good wood are on th verge of extinction and you really need to find the right Luthier that may still have some small inventory. It is not easy to get these types of wood from them as they may want to keep them for ‘distinguished artises’.
Cedar top guitars in Lactice braced construction with arched back usually sound rather dark like you Kris Barnett. If you like bright treble, you ought to consider spruce top instead. Some people like the deep and dark sound!
You may like to try changing strings, I recommend that you use Savarez treble and Daddaio Exp45 bases (all normall tension will do) and see how you Kris Barnett will sound. I believe you will hear the difference.
Good luck.

Hi Raymond,
Thanks for your well wishes. I’ve played around with quite a few strings over the past 12 years. Personally, my tastes leans towards D’Addarios EXP 46 strings at the moment.
I’ve had some good experience with Savarez red card strings, but they don’t give me the kind of sound I’m looking for at the moment.
No need to be sorry about me giving up my current guitars. They’re both really good, especially the Menkevich. I’m actually quite reluctant to let the Menkevich go as it’s an exceptional guitar, and I’ve grown very fond of it over the years.
I decided to hit the ‘reset’ button on my musical sound as I evolve into the next stage of my musical life. It’s exciting and somewhat nerve-wrecking. I don’t know what’s going to happen or what I’m going to sound like in the next 1-2 years, but I’m looking forward to the adventure.
It’s a great guitar and very playable. I am about to change the string to Savarez as it provides a more correct tuning in the higher position.
I like the dark tone very much, it helps delivering a sorrow message.
Thanks!!
Hi Addy,
I’m happy to hear that you are enjoying the Barnett. The dark tone is very distinct and exquisite. I’m glad that its character is a good fit with your own.
I’m happy to see that the instrument has found itself a good owner who will make great use of it. Happy playing!
